Fall 2016 Couture // VALENTINO

Pierpaolo Piccioli & Maria Grazia Chiuri

Inspiration: Elizabethan Era, 16th Century, Shakespeare, Catholicism

Valentino's latest couture collection was dominated by black and white looks, however the brand didn't forget about its signature red accent. The repeating styles with ruffed collars, structured shoulders and square necklines suggest it was inspired by the Elizabethan Era and is particularly linked to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The looks can be compared with European Royals from the 16th Century, and also to religious figures:

Archduchess Margaret of Austria (nun), 16th century // Valentino Look 12

Sebastian King of Portugal, 1575 // Valentino Look 17

The "Darnley Portait" of Queen Elizabeth I, 1575 // Valentino Look 34

Queen Katherine Parr, 1545 // Valentino Look 42

All of the models had a delicate "no-makeup" look and tidy mid-parted hairstyles with tiny gold details. It appears that they are all wearing the same boots, which were matched with both elegant gowns and leather trousers.

Thank you William Shakespeare for your wonderful work, which allowed you to be remembered even after 400 years and to inspire such a beautiful collection as Valentino, and thank you Maria for your final collection that you prepared for the Italian fashion house.

Here below are six of my favourite looks from the collection:
